So for a Halloween art exhibition opening last night, I made these frightful finger bites. Super easy!
I used turkey hot dogs and tore them in half by twisting them (to give an authentic looking tear end). Then I cut the tip of each end off half-way, leaving the back half to hold what will become ‘the nail’. I then scored the finger bend lines and threw them into a pot of boiling, salted water. I cut the white onion slivers to mimic the shape of nails that had been around for a while. I tossed those in the boiling water as well. I strained it and then mixed up some ketchup to use as the adhesive and also the decorative blood. I used organic ketchup and mixed it with some cumin, sriracha, worchestershire, and little honey. I dabbed a bit on the nail base and then placed a boiled onion segment on top. I then dipped the base of each ‘finger’ in the ketchup mixture. I then laid each ‘finger’ on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and baked in the oven at 350 degrees for about ten minutes. This really finished off the aged look!
I initially displayed them on an ice filled plate, but as it melted, it just got gross. Next time, I’ll likely just lay them on a salt-spread plate.
